A taxonomic approach on diagnostic characters used to define new pterosaur taxa and an estimation of pterosaur diversity

چکیده
Abstract Diagnostic characters from 227 pterosaur species were listed, separated into cranial or post-cranial elements and counted. From 21 23 elements, most diagnostic related to phalanges (15%) rostrum. Post-cranial comprise 44.23%, 55.77% of all used in diagnoses. The highest correlation between features occurs the coracoid scapula. 25.11% 28.63% sampled taxa diagnosed with 3-4 5-6 characters, respectively. mean number 6.79 was found specimens both 4.86 4.17 those just 31 (13.7%) erected based on single which are frequently complete partial mandibles (n=18). We estimate that 23.4% total genera currently known, 90% this diversity be unveiled up 2145. As requirements broad cautious revision genus/group must undertaken, some deposits will provide mostly fragmented incomplete material, assignment fairly inclusive taxonomic level is feasible. Tracing scenario can guide future works description new taxa.

A New View of Pterosaur Feeding Habits
1633 Few things capture a child’s imagination like the age of dinosaurs, and it’s no wonder. The dinosaur seems an improbable beast, yet the fossil record tells us that vegetarian sauropods longer than a football fi eld once lumbered alongside tractor-trailer–sized predatory carnosaurs. Above these behemoths soared the reptilian pterosaurs, some propelled by wings spanning more than 12 meters. ...

A New Small-Bodied Azhdarchoid Pterosaur from the Lower Cretaceous of England and Its Implications for Pterosaur Anatomy, Diversity and Phylogeny
BACKGROUND Pterosaurs have been known from the Cretaceous sediments of the Isle of Wight (southern England, United Kingdom) since 1870. We describe the three-dimensional pelvic girdle and associated vertebrae of a small near-adult pterodactyloid from the Atherfield Clay Formation (lower Aptian, Lower Cretaceous). Despite acknowledged variation in the pterosaur pelvis, previous studies have not ...
متن کاملOn the Size and Flight Diversity of Giant Pterosaurs, the Use of Birds as Pterosaur Analogues and Comments on Pterosaur Flightlessness
The size and flight mechanics of giant pterosaurs have received considerable research interest for the last century but are confused by conflicting interpretations of pterosaur biology and flight capabilities. Avian biomechanical parameters have often been applied to pterosaurs in such research but, due to considerable differences in avian and pterosaur anatomy, have lead to systematic errors i...
